Overview
RED Family is a feature inside the My Vodafone app that lets a RED Prime+ plan owner share their plan’s minutes, internet, and SMS with family members, redistribute that quota member by member, and manage what happens if someone leaves the family plan. It turns a plan that used to be single-owner and static into something a household can actively manage together.
Problem
Family mobile plans create two hard problems at once: fairness (who gets how much of a shared quota) and clarity (what happens, and what it costs, if the plan setup changes). Without a clear interface, both problems usually surface as support calls, not app usage.
The plan owner has no way to see or adjust who is using what, and leaving or changing a family plan can feel like a billing trap with no visible terms until after the fact.
Goals
- Let a plan owner see and adjust quota per family member without needing to contact support.
- Make redistributing minutes, data, and SMS between members fast enough to do casually, not just as a rare admin task.
- Make leaving or changing a family plan fully transparent before any payment is confirmed.
- Fit all of this inside the existing My Vodafone app shell and RED Prime+ plan screens, not as a separate app or flow.
Business Context
RED Prime+ is one of Vodafone Egypt’s family-oriented plan tiers, built around a shared quota pool rather than individual, siloed allowances. For that pooled-quota model to actually work for a household, the plan owner needs real, ongoing control over distribution, not just a one-time setup at signup. The feature also had to cover plan exit cleanly, since leaving a family plan changes both benefits and price.

Constraints
Discovery
The redistribute-quota flow surfaces the core tension directly: a plan owner moving 10,000 MB to one family member needs to see, in the same view, what that leaves available to move to everyone else.
Treating quota as a single shared pool with live before-and-after totals, not as separate per-member balances, is what makes that trade-off visible in one place instead of hidden across multiple screens.
Strategy
The feature is structured as three connected moments: an onboarding tooltip that introduces Family Management on first use, a RED Management screen showing the owner’s own quota breakdown alongside a “Setup your family” invite action, and a redistribute-quota screen where the owner adjusts each member’s share with live before-and-after bars. A separate, clearly worded exit flow (“Leave RED Family”) handles the plan-change and billing side on its own screen, so it never gets buried inside day-to-day quota management.
UX Decisions
Stepper controls next to a live before-and-after bar
Plus/minus steppers for megabytes, minutes, and SMS, so the effect of a change is visible before confirming it.
The member list sits directly beneath the controls
Each family member’s name, phone number, and current allowance shown right there, so the owner is always redistributing in context, not in the abstract.
Two concrete outcomes, shown side by side
“Leave to RED” versus “Leave to Flex,” each with the resulting plan’s real price and included benefits, rather than a single generic confirmation.
One first-use tooltip, not a tour
“Family Management & Requests” introduces the feature once, briefly, rather than a multi-step walkthrough.
Wireframes
The redistribute-quota screen went through several passes on how to show a live before-and-after change for three quota types (data, minutes, SMS) at once without the screen turning into a spreadsheet. The stepper-plus-bar pattern was chosen specifically because it keeps the “available versus assigned” relationship visible without requiring the user to do the subtraction themselves.
UI Design

The onboarding tooltip sits over the My Vodafone home screen, introducing Family Management with a short description and a single “Got it” dismissal.

RED Management shows the owner’s own quota breakdown (calls, internet, SMS) in a card layout, a Quota Breakdown toggle between “My Quota” and “My Extras,” and a “Setup your family” card with an illustrated invite prompt.

Redistribute Quota lists each quota type with a stepper, a segmented before-and-after bar, and a live family member list with per-member totals.
Leaving the family plan gets its own dedicated screen, since a billing change deserves full-width attention rather than sharing space with day-to-day quota management.

Motion
Motion here is functional, not expressive: the before-and-after quota bar is the one place animation carries real information, visually splitting a shared pool as the owner adjusts a stepper. The redistribution reads as a direct manipulation, a live split, not a static number changing on submit.
Design System
RED Family reuses Vodafone Egypt’s core My Vodafone app components (cards, steppers, segmented bars, red primary buttons) rather than introducing a separate visual style, since the feature needed to feel like a native part of account management, not a bolted-on family mode.

Accessibility
Testing
Validation centered on the billing and support logic the exit flow needed to represent correctly: plan terms, pricing, and what changes for the user. Getting that wrong would have been the most costly kind of mistake.
Business Impact
By moving quota redistribution and plan-exit terms into clear, self-service screens, RED Family reduces the two most likely reasons a family-plan customer would otherwise need to contact support: unclear allowance distribution and unclear billing consequences of leaving the plan.
Results
The feature shipped as four connected flows inside the My Vodafone app: family onboarding, RED Prime+ quota management, member-level quota redistribution, and a transparent family-plan exit flow.
Learnings
Shared-resource features live or die on whether a trade-off is visible. Showing quota redistribution as a live before-and-after split, instead of two separate numbers a user has to compare mentally, is what turns a confusing admin task into something a plan owner can do with confidence.
Reflection
This feature is a good example of a project with no flashy surface, just quota, billing, and family accounts, that still has real design stakes. Getting the redistribution bar and the exit comparison right matters more here than in a campaign, because the cost of getting it wrong shows up directly on someone’s bill.
